Instead of abdicating responsibility and leaving universities to fend for themselves, the government must commit to providing adequate funding and support to ensure that education remains accessible to all.

Following widespread public outcry, particularly from students, the government has decided to halt the controversial increase in university tuition fees. The planned hike, grounded in Ministerial Regulation No. 2/2024, however, remains in force and is poised to take effect in 2025. In recent days, Indonesia has witnessed an uprising that cuts to the core of our educational system. Students from universities nationwide have taken to the streets, demanding not just government transparency but also a say in how their tuition fees are set.
